One UGC video is not a campaign
The usual way a brand tries UGC: find one creator, brief one video, run it, conclude that UGC does or does not work.
That is not a test. That is a coin flip with a production budget attached.
The hit rate is low by design
One creative benchmark in the fitness vertical found that only 5% to 7% of tested ad creatives became winners, and that somewhere between 20 and 32 distinct angles had to be tested to find a single sustainable performer.
That figure is vertical-specific and comes from a vendor, so treat the exact number loosely. The shape of it is consistent with what most performance teams see: most creative does not work, and the only way to find the one that does is to produce enough of them.
If you brief one video, your expected outcome is failure. Not because UGC is weak, but because one is not a sample.
Creative now expires faster
Reported creative lifespans have compressed sharply. Estimates put useful life somewhere between three and six weeks on Meta and one to two weeks on TikTok, with some sources claiming far shorter.
The numbers vary enough that you should measure your own rather than trust a benchmark. The pattern to watch is the combination: frequency climbing, CPM drifting up, click-through drifting down. One of those alone means little. All three together means the creative is done.
Test the hook, not the colour
The highest-value variable is the first two seconds. Concept, hook, format and proof produce far more learning than micro-variants like a different caption font.
This is why a proper UGC brief starts with a list of openings rather than a product description. Same product, same creator, six different first lines. That tells you something. Six colour-graded versions of the same opening tells you almost nothing.
Hook rate — three-second views divided by impressions — is the metric to watch here, but do not read it alone. High attention with no conversion just means you wrote a good lie.
What to actually commission
- Multiple concepts, not multiple edits. Different angles on why someone buys.
- Several hooks per concept, shot in the same session so the cost per variant is low.
- Every aspect ratio you will run, delivered at the same time, with paid usage rights agreed up front.
The goal is not a video. It is a library you can test, retire and refresh without going back to square one each quarter.
