Discoverability is the whole problem, and clips are the honest answer
Ask podcasters what is hard and the answer is not editing, or guests, or gear.
In survey data reported by The Podcast Host, 72% named discoverability and growing an audience as their major challenge. Making money came second at 39%, audience engagement at 32%, time and burnout at 30%.
Nothing else is close. Three quarters of the field has the same problem, and it is not a production problem.
Why it got harder
There are now well over three million podcasts and a record number publishing regularly. Global listenership is still growing, but the rate has fallen from a 20.9% peak in 2020 to single digits.
More shows, slower growth. That is a discovery squeeze, and it does not get solved by making the next episode slightly better.
People find shows in places your show does not exist
Roughly a third of weekly US podcast listeners use YouTube to discover shows. Around half of Americans aged 12 and over have now watched a podcast rather than only listened.
If your show is audio-only in an RSS feed, you are absent from the place a large share of discovery actually happens. Not ranked badly. Absent.
This is the part most independent podcasters underrate. The episode is not the product as far as discovery is concerned. The clip is.
The real reason clips do not get made
Not scepticism. Time.
Cutting three to five decent clips by hand runs to several hours per episode, on top of recording and editing. Some estimates put full repurposing at ten hours or more. After a few weeks of that, the clips quietly stop.
So the question is not whether clips work. It is whether clipping survives contact with a normal week. If it depends on you finding a spare evening, it will not.
A caution on the numbers you will see
A lot of repurposing content quotes figures like 400% more engagement or 12x reach. We went looking for the studies behind those and could not find them. They circulate without sources.
The defensible case is simpler and does not need inflated claims: most discovery now happens on video platforms, your show is probably not on them, and clips are the cheapest way to be.
